Middle Provo River Fishing Report 8-1-2017

Location

Middle Provo River

Overview

UPDATE: As of 8/1 the flows have decreased to 400 CFS

Fishing on the Middle Provo has been consistent with lots of angling pressure. The flows have been steady at 500 cfs for a couple weeks now, making crossing the river actually possible in some spots. However, still use extreme caution as this is still somewhat of a high flow for the middle. It is easy to incorrectly judge the depth and speed of the water and find yourself in a sticky situation. There has been lots of angling pressure recently, but this should start to decrease during the month of August.

Not much has changed in terms of bugs. PMD’s, caddis, midges, and sow bugs have all be producing fish while nymphing. The fish aren’t really keying in on one or the other so make sure to always be changing your flies, depth, and weights.

If you’re looking to fish dry flies, a drag-free drift is the most important thing when casting to rising trout on the middle. Most of the rising fish are eating dead or crippled flies. Dead flies don’t swim… Make sure that your flies are not dragging across the water in your presentation. I believe that this is more important than fly choice and I think that holds true for most rivers around the west. Obviously you should try to “match the hatch” as much as possible, but make sure that fly you’ve chosen isn’t skating on the water when casting to risers. Look for the best dry fly fishing during mid-morning and evening times. There is a solid PMD spinner fall in the evenings.

With the recent amount of angling pressure, remember that is is extremely important to have common courtesy and respect for other anglers on the river. Be conscious of where other people are and how you might affect their fishing. Remember that we’re all out there for the same reasons and want to enjoy our time on the river equally. As always, have fun!

Middle Provo River Fishing Report 6-28-2017

Location

Middle Provo River

Overview

Fishing the Middle Provo has been great-granted you get good water.  The flows are still high(sub 1000cfs), but at least they are no longer running at 1700cfs.  Crossing will still be a challenge and is not recommended at the moment. That being said, our guides have been doing well nymphing with caddis, pmds, sows, worms, and of course-midges.  Even with the high flows we have been seeing a few fish eating PMD’s on the surface so if Dry flies are your top priority don’t rule out this awesome stretch of river.  As it is nearing the end of June, we should see some Green Drakes popping any day, but the hatch will likely be delayed due to the colder water and higher flows.  The Drakes generally start lower on the river near Deer Creek and make their way up stream day by day.  If you fish closer to Deer Creek, it is not a bad idea to have some Drake nymphs and Stonefly nymphs in your box, but dont fully count on it quite yet.

With the higher flows target the slower moving water and look for risers in the back eddies and soft “pillows” of water where the current rises to the top.  If you are nyphing, target the inside seams wherever you can find them as well as any run with a lot of structure and a reasonable rate of flow. In addition to that, pocket water fishing should produce with heavy dropper rigs and traditional nymph rigs.

Middle Provo River Fishing Report 5-9-2017

Location

Middle Provo River

Overview

Flows have increased on the Middle Provo river.  There has been a good midge hatch and some blue wings are on the river.  You might also come across some Mother’s Day caddis on the water.  With the higher flow target the slower moving water and look for risers in the back eddies.  If you are nymphing try using a San Juan worm  or larger sow bug as your attractor pattern and trail that fly with a midge or a blue wing nymph.  Be mindful of the high flows and make sure you get your footing before trying to wade into the river.
